It is with sadness we announce that the Rt Rev Robert (Bob) Halliday, former Bishop of Brechin, has died at the age of 93.
A statement from the Diocese of Edinburgh, where he lived in the latter part his life, said: “We are deeply saddened to inform you that the Rt Rev Robert Halliday passed away peacefully on Tuesday, 11 November, surrounded by his family. His funeral service will be at held at 1pm on 27 November at St Cuthbert’s, Colinton.
Bishop Bob was consecrated Bishop of Brechin in 1990 served there until his retirement in 1996. The Rt Rev Andrew Swift, the current Bishop of Brechin said: “There are fond memories of Bishop Bob’s time here and he remained a firm supporter of this Diocese in his retirement. Although he moved to Edinburgh he was often seen at major festivals in St Paul’s Cathedral in Dundee.
“I always valued his wisdom and his wit in matters of our church and its place in Scotland. We will keep him and his family in our prayers at this sad time.”
Planning has started for a memorial service in Bishop Bob’s former cathedral in Dundee, probably in the New Year.
Before and after his episcopacy, Bishop Bob offered many decades of service to the Diocese of Edinburgh and to the Province. He was a part-time lecturer of New Testament at Edinburgh Theological College from 1963 to 1974, and Rector of Holy Cross, Davidson’s Mains, from 1963 to 1983. He was also an external tutor at the Department of Christian Ethics and Practical Theology at the University of Edinburgh from 1969 to 1971 and a Chaplain to the Bishop of Edinburgh from 1967 to 1973. He was Canon of St Mary’s Cathedral from 1973 to 1983.
From 1997, following his retirement, he returned to Edinburgh and ministered in a non-stipendiary capacity at Christ Church, Morningside (1997–2009), St Peter’s, Lutton Place (2009–2018) and St Cuthbert’s, Colinton (2018–2025).
Bishop Mark Strange, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, said: “Bishop Bob was much loved within the Province, and he continued right to the end of his life to be an active member of the Scottish Episcopal Church. We pray for his family at this sad time.”
