The Rev Dr Elizabeth Breakey Appointed as New Canon

The Rt Rev Dr Nicholas Bundock, Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev Dr Elizabeth Breakey, Priest in Charge of St John’s, Stranraer and St Ninian’s, Portpatrick, as the newest Canon of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow.

Bishop Nick says: “Since joining the Diocese in 2022, Elizabeth has quietly become one of those people you find yourself relying on – thoughtful, prayerful, and wise. Many of you will know her through her service on Diocesan Council, her work as clergy representative to General Synod, her involvement in the Preparatory Committee, and through her ministry as Rural Dean. She brings a rare combination of theological depth, steady pastoral instinct, and a genuine commitment to building a Church where people can belong and flourish.

Elizabeth was priested in 2013, and has a remarkable story of ministry that includes being the first woman to be ordained by a woman (Bishop Barbara Darling) in the Anglican Church of Australia. We’re deeply grateful for the gifts and experience she brings back home to Scotland – and I’m delighted the Diocese will now be strengthened by her ministry in this new way.

Please pray for Elizabeth, for her family, and for our Diocese, as we follow God’s call towards becoming a Church for Everyone.”

A Service of Installation for the Rev Dawn Matthew and the Rev Dr Elizabeth Breakey will take place during Evensong at St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow on Sunday 15 February 2026 at 5pm (300 Great Western Road, G4 9JB). All are very welcome.
